Hello parents!
I hope everyone had a great weekend! I closed on my new house so Ms. Greathouse officially has a Great House! Please don't forget to complete the parent survey. There are two different surveys specific for homeroom and PM parents. At this time, I am still in need of a Lead Room Parent and a Basket Raffle Coordinator Volunteer for my homeroom class. Please make sure to complete the correct survey by clicking HERE. Important upcoming dates: August 28th @ 6:30PM = Curriculum Night August 29th= Fall Pictures We have started using our agendas. In student agendas, you will find topics that we plan to learn each day as well as some extra practice workbook pages that go with each skill. I expect all students to practice math for 15 minutes each night. Instead of focusing on a set number of problems, I just want them to put time towards their practice. Practice makes perfect and helps students gain confidence in their math abilities. Good and (not so good) behavior notes will also be written in the agenda. Please make sure you are signing the agenda nightly. Curriculum Updates: Blue Math: Students in blue math are working on 5th grade unit 1. So far in this unit, we have learned how to multiply whole numbers using the area model and the standard algorithm and reviewed place value. Later this week, we will learn how to divide whole numbers while also learning the order of operations. We will also work on multiplying powers of ten. I strongly encourage you to practice math facts nightly with your child. Memorization of multiplication and division facts makes life so much easier :). This unit has 4 prioritized standards. In order to have a guaranteed and viable curriculum, students will be monitored until they reach mastery on these important standards. We will discuss priority standards more at curriculum night. The test over this unit is tentatively scheduled for September 27th. Yellow Math: Students in yellow math are working on 6th grade unit 1. So far in this unit, students have reviewed how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers as well as how to add and subtract decimals. This week, we will review how to multiply and divide decimals. This covers 4 units that they learned last year while taking 5th grade math. It is a challenging unit if students have not mastered these skills last year. Please make sure you are reviewing with your child to ensure they are confident in these skills. We will also learn how to find the greatest common factors and the least common multiples between two or three numbers. This unit has 2 prioritized standards. In order to have a guaranteed and viable curriculum, students will be monitored until they reach mastery on these important standards. We will discuss priority standards more at curriculum night. The test over this unit is tentatively scheduled for September 18th. Social Studies: We have started the year off with a social studies unit where we are learning about the Turn of the Century. We will learn about a second wave of westward expansion, the industrial revolution, and immigration patterns. We will also learn how America grew as a world power throughout this time period. The overarching question for this quarter will be "How did electricity influence the economy at the Turn of the Century?". Students will work on answering this question using a podcast project in groups. The test over this unit is September 6th.
