I hope everyone had a great weekend with the beautiful weather!!
This week is the IOWA test for 5th and 3rd grade. There will be no school volunteers at this time. The IOWA schedule can be found below. Please make sure your child gets to school on time and is able to walk all the way down to our classroom by 7:40. They also need a good breakfast and a great nights sleep! We want them alert and focused during testing. 10/25 Reading Vocabulary 10/26 Written Expression Spelling Capitalization Punctuation 10/27 Mathematics Computation 10/28 Science Social Studies 5th graders have not been on their best behavior lately. This is a big problem during IOWA testing week. For this week, we are focusing on following directions. They are capable of following directions but choose not to listen or choose to not follow directions on purpose. Please make sure you are checking class dojo nightly and see if they are losing points for not following directions. There will be prizes at the end of the week for students who have done well with following directions. There is also a class dojo rewards day next monday for Halloween! Students have been earning points the whole first quarter and will get rewards based on their number of points. I will be sending home a weekly dojo report friday with their total points as well for our rewards day Monday. Class updates: Blue Math- We have started this week with dividing decimals. They need to continue to practice multiplying and dividing decimals at home. They have several practice pages from their workbook in their binders. As we have no technology this week, we are going to be practicing out of their workbook and those will go home to practice and review. Our test over this unit will be next Friday November 4th. Yellow Math- We have been reviewing converting measurement for over a week now. They have learned how to convert customary measurements and metric measurements. We will also be learning volume later this week. There are several practice pages we have done in class in students binders for extra practice and review. They need to be reviewing these nightly. Our test over this unit will be November 16th. Social Studies- We started this week learning about America during the turn of the century. We will be covering westward movement, cattle drives, the industrial revolution, inventors, immigration, and affects on Native American Cultures. Our test over this unit will be November 11th. Because of the short week this week, I will be sending out a weekly blast tonight with information for next week :). I will send this link out again on Monday as a reminder.
I hope everyone had a great long weekend and enjoyed the fall weather and some good football! We are starting our new math units for both blue and yellow math. Check below for current skills and some resources. We are also finishing up our unit on cells and microorganisms. I am planning a day of science labs for next Thursday, October 20th. In one of the labs we will be using microscopes to look at cells and microorganisms. In another lab, students will be creating edible cells out of candy. Please sign up to either volunteer to help in class OR to bring in something for the edible cell. The sign up link is below. If you sign up to volunteer, you need to have complete the volunteer training at least 48 hours ahead of time. The candy we need are: twizzlers, whip cream, marshmallows (large), tic-tacs, and go-gurt. If you are able to, please sign up using the link below. **Make sure you sign up for the right slot depending on if your child is in my AM or PM class. http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c044eaba62ea2f85-cell Science- Students were given our science project last last week. It is called "Cell City". They are being asked to create a city model and relate the organelle cells to the different parts/buildings of a city and their jobs. I have found that this greatly helps them relate new vocabulary to things they already know. Today I had them write the due date of this project in their agenda as the 26th of October. THIS HAS CHANGED because of the IOWA testing that week. Instead, I am moving it up to be due next Friday, the 21st. The project should not take too much time. They can create any model of a city they want, 2D with pictures or drawings, or 3D. What ever they prefer! They then need to complete the sentences relating the organelle to the city part. After they write these sentences in the prompts, they need to either write them neatly on a piece of paper or type them up. Please let me know if there are any questions! Math: Blue Math- we are learning how to multiply and divide decimals. There is a very useful video and notes on my website for students to review at home. We will also be doing them in class. Our test over unit 3 will be November 2nd. Students will also be multiplying and dividing by powers of 10. We have done this before but it is difficult for them as it requires in depth place value knowledge. Please make sure they are reviewing nightly at home. Yellow Math- we are starting out unit on volume and measurement. We will learn how to convert customary units of measurement and metric units of measurement. We will also be learning about the concept of volume and how to find the volume of a rectangular prism. There are some great customary units of measurement songs on my website. These are great ways for kids to study every night. Out test over this unit will be on November 18th. I hope you all are looking forward to a long weekend! Please check out some important updates below before we leave for a fun fall weekend :)
Here is a letter from our room parent, Alyson Hughes! To the Parents of Ms. Greathouse’s 5th Grade Class: Hello! I hope everyone is getting adjusted to the new school year and the children are enjoying school! As the Lead Room parent for our class, I wanted to introduce myself and let everyone know about the school year. My name is Alyson Hughes, and my child’s name is Abbie Hughes. Ms. Greathouse has planned many wonderful activities and projects for our class. These activities are only possible with the help of donations received from classroom parents. That is why we are asking for one voluntary donation for the classroom fund and the basket fund combined. Whatever donation you can make is greatly appreciated. The recommended amount is $35 ($20 for classroom donation fund and $15 for the raffle basket). If you would like to make an additional donation, please include a note that states if you want the additional funds added to the class fund or the raffle basket fund. If no indication is given, additional funds automatically go to the raffle basket fund. The classroom donation fund is used to support the following PTA coordinated items:
*Note that money donated to the classroom fund is not used toward winter or year-endteacher gifts. Teacher gifts will be up to the discretion of each individual family. Please send your donation into school with your student by Wednesday, October 3, 2016. If you are sending a check, make checks payable to: Alyson Hughes. Feel free to contact Ms. Greathouse or myself with any questions. We are all looking forward to a great year and thank you in advance for all of your time and financial support. Sincerely, Alyson Hughes [email protected] or 770.876.3321 Here are some updates for current units: Blue Math- We are finishing up Unit 2 which covers decimal place value and adding and subtracting decimals.
