Happy Tuesday!
We are already off to a great week. Check out some important announcements below. Student Council applications went out on Monday. Students who want to run for executive board of student council need to have these turned in by Friday. They need to have their speech already written for if they make it as a finalist. Recovery: We have had a lot of inquiries regarding recovery or retakes of assignments.Students will have the opportunity to recover FAILING GRADES for summative assessments (test grades) to achieve the mastery level of 70%. This recovery option does not include classwork grades, quizzes or cold reads. Writing assessments also will not be recovered, as constant remediation is given throughout the year. Yellow Math: We are working on measurement conversions and finding volume. We will also review how to read line plots. Our test for this unit is tentatively scheduled for next Tuesday. Blue Math: We have been working with decimals. We have learned about decimal place value, and how to add and subtract decimals using models as well as using the algorithm. Students are getting a great grasp on the concept and doing well! Our test for this unit is tentatively scheduled for next Tuesday. Social Studies: We have been learning about reconstruction after the Civil War. This includes how the north and south were doing after the civil war, how former slaves were treated (13th, 14th, and 15th amendments, Black Codes, Jim Crow laws), how we amend the constitution, and the rights and responsibilities of American citizens. Notes are located in interactive notebooks and some are on my website. Here's to a great week ahead!!

Good Evening!
Please read below for some news of the events of the week. Tomorrow is college jersey day! Wear your favorite teams colors and show your support! Signed papers are due Tuesday. Please sign the cover sheet indicating that you saw your child's graded papers. Social Studies: We are starting our new unit on reconstruction. We will learn about how The United States had to make several changes after the end of the Civil War. We will learn about the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments and how sharecropping replaced slavery in the south. End of Unit Assessment is scheduled for October 2nd. Yellow Math: We are coming to an end with Unit 5- geometry. Our test is still scheduled for tomorrow (Tuesday 9/22) . It will cover the attributes of shapes. We will be starting Unit 6 on Wednesday. This unit will cover Volume and Measurement. We will learn how to find the volume of a rectangular prism and how to convert measurements. Students will gain an understanding of both customary and metric measurement and volume. Blue Math: We are continuing our work with decimals. This week, we will be learning how to round, compare, and add decimals. Our test is scheduled for October 2nd. I hope everyone is ready for another great week!
7 Mindset Update: This week, we will learn about Everything is Possible. This mindset is all about discovering your dreams and believing that with hard work an dedication, you can make that dream a reality. Homeroom reminders: Conferences start this week! Please double check you conference time on the sign up genius. The link is below. http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c044eaba62ea2f85-fall Blue math: We will be starting Unit 2 - (Decimals) this week. Students will start their first STEM project of the year as well. It will incorporate both math and science. They will complete this class with their teams. Please remind your child how important it is to work well with others :). Yellow math: Last week, we did work with congruency, symmetry, and translations. Our quiz over these skills will be Tuesday (9/15). Will be continuing our geometry unit this week. We will learn about the attributes of shapes and how to find the area of several of these shapes. We will also be learning about triangles. This will include the different types of triangles and finding the area of these triangles. Our triangles quiz will be tentatively scheduled for Friday (9/18). We will shoot to have our test over this unit on Tuesday (9/22). Science: We have been learning about classification of plants and animals. We have learned about vertebrates and invertebrates, the 5 different types of vertebrates, and vascular and nonvascular plants. We will have our science quiz on classification on Wednesday (9/16). Our classification test will be Friday (9/18). ** I know there area several quizzes this week for yellow math. Please be aware that these are very short assessments which are designed to make sure they are ready for the upcoming test. I use these results to drive my instruction and remediate before the final test. These will be graded and returned before the tests as study tools. I hope everyone had an AMAZING long weekend and are ready to kick back into gear tomorrow.
Tomorrow will be our first day with a new program. We will be teaching the 7 mindsets (of success and happiness). Each Monday, in this case Tuesday, we will spend the first 30ish minutes of our day learning strategies to be good learners and people. You can find more information here: http://7mindsets.com/7-mindsets-at-school/ This week is just an introduction where we will learn what the 7 mindsets are. Yellow Math: We are continuing unit 5 (2D shapes). This week we will be learning the attributes of shapes. We will extend our learning by learning how to find the area of these shapes. Blue Math: We are finishing up Unit 1 this week. We will have a quiz on Wednesday over expressions and the order of operations. Our Unit 1 test will be friday. It will cover multiplication, division, order of operations, and expressions. Science: We will continue to learn about how animals and plants are classified. Unit projects were given out on Friday. They will be due September 16th. Their animal must be a real vertebrate so they can research to get the correct information. They MAY use an extinct animal if there is enough information available to them. I hope everyone is ready for a great week!! Good Afternoon!
I hope everyone is having a good week so far. I apologize for not getting this out on Sunday. It was brought to my attention that several parents were not receiving my emails. I wanted to wait until I had that all sorted out. I have uploaded my classes to SeeSaw- an online portfolio. Please follow the following links to sign up so you can see some of your child's work :) AM: Click on https://app.seesaw.me/s/009-249-527 to sign up -- it takes just 30 seconds. PM: Click on https://app.seesaw.me/s/029-550-335 to sign up -- it takes just 30 seconds. Once you sign up, you can download the Seesaw Parent app for iPhone or Android, or access your child's journal on the web. Science: We have just started out first science unit on Classification. There is no information as to when out EE lab will be yet for this unit. As soon as we know, we will send out a Sign Up Genius for you to sign up to volunteer. In this unit, we will be learning the purpose of classification and how living things are classified (plants and animals). Please reference the standard below if you have any questions. S5L1. Students will classify organisms into groups and relate how they determined the groups with how and why scientists use classification. a. Demonstrate how animals are sorted into groups (vertebrate and invertebrate) and how vertebrates are sorted into groups (fish, amphibian, reptile, bird, and mammal). b. Demonstrate how plants are sorted into groups. Tentative assessment dates: Quiz- Tuesday, September 15th Test- Friday September 18th Yellow Math: We just finished our first unit :). We will be starting Unit 5- 2D shapes towards the end of this week. Students will be learning properties of shapes and how they relate to each other in a hierarchy. We will be extending their learning to calculating the area of some of the parallelograms. We do not have tentative assessment dates yet. I will update you once I have these. Blue Math: We are still continuing Unit 1 (whole numbers). We have already learned Multiplication and Division of whole numbers. We are now learning about the order of operations and mathematical expressions. We will have our quiz over expressions and the order of operations Wednesday, September 9th. Our Unit 1 test will be Friday, September 11th. Please make sure your child is still reviewing their multiplication times tables! Without these basic facts, the large number multiplication and division are very difficult. You can find some online mad minutes here: http://www.webmathminute.com/online.asp . I hope everyone enjoys a great labor day weekend!! |
