Unleash the Lions
The 2018-19 school year is quickly coming to an end, and now it is time to celebrate the achievements of our 5th grade students. The Dolvin staff has worked with the room parents to coordinate the activities for the last week of school. To make all of these activities possible, we are asking for a DONATION of $10 per student. An email will be sent to you with a link for volunteer sign-ups on Thursday, April 25th at 7PMby your Homeroom Teacher. Volunteer sign-ups will be on a first come, first served basis. When signing up to volunteer, please select only one event per family to allow an opportunity for all parents. If additional slots become available your child’s teacher will contact you. The schedule of events will be coming home with your child today. Ron Clark Academy: I had the amazing opportunity to attend a day of training and professional development at the Ron Clark Academy in Atlanta. If you do not know what this is, it is basically Hogwarts for muggles :). I learned a lot and am planning on implementing some of the strategies in my class to create a rigorous, fun, and family oriented learning environment. When I try new things, students will give me feedback in order for me to see exactly what will work for me in my classroom. I may also send home a parent survey just to gauge where I am and where I want to be. This will create three pillars of education in my classroom which are academic rigor, student engagement, and culture and community. I can't wait to take what I learned and saw and create a magical place for students to learn. Curriculum Updates: Blue Math: We are working on unit 7, coordinate plane geometry. In this unit, students will learn how to plot and read ordered pairs in all four quadrants. They will be able to create patterns to solve real world problems in the first quadrant using x-y charts as well. So far, we have learned how to plot ordered pairs, write ordered pairs, and develop patterns. This week, we will work on real world patterns that can be graphed in a coordinate plane. Yellow math will also be learning in their unit about coordinate plane geometry so we will be fluid and work together with both math groups in class! Our test over this unit will be Friday, May 10th. Yellow Math: We are continuing our work on integers by using integers in the coordinate plane. Students will be able to read and plot points. They will also be able to create shapes in the coordinate grid. For example, given 3 points, they will be able to identify where another point will need to be in order to make a square. So far, we have reviewed how to plot and read ordered pairs. We have also learned how to calculate distance from point to point on a coordinate plane. Lastly, we have learned how to identify shapes in the coordinate grid. This week, we will review graphing inequalities, reflecting points, and finding missing points on a coordinate plane. Blue math will also be learning in their unit about coordinate plane geometry so we will be fluid and work together with both math groups in class! Our test over this unit will be Friday, May 10th. Science: Our last science unit will be over Heredity. In this unit, students will learn how traits are inherited as well as learned. They will be able to tell the difference between inherited traits and instincts as well as learned behaviors. So far, we have learned about inherited traits. This week, we will learn about instincts and learned behaviors. Our test over this unit will be Wednesday, May 8th. We will also be doing another short review on microorganisms. In this unit we will learn how microorganisms are beneficial and harmful. We will have a formative assessment over this information but no test. Social Studies: Our last social studies unit will cover 1975- present day as well as personal economic and budgeting. There are a lot of events packed into these decades with very little time to cover them all. Students will be focusing on the end of the cold war, conflict in the middle east, and modern technology. We will have a formative assessment over this unit but no test.

Happy Monday!
As we come to an end of our Milestone testing, I want to say that I am very proud of how hard most of the students have been working on their assessments. They are focused and trying their best. I hope that they can say that they worked their best on each and every test. Important Updates: Middle School rising 6th grade parent meeting: (please see the following message from AMMS) Please join us on Wednesday, April 24th at AMMS for our Rising 6th Grade Parent Night from 6-7pm. We’re looking forward to meeting you and providing an overview of what to expect in the 2019-20 year to come! * If you have any questions about your child's placement Unleash the Lions The 2018-19 school year is quickly coming to an end, and now it is time to celebrate the achievements of our 5th grade students. Please check below for some important weekly reminders. Milestones: Milestones will take place this week and last through next Tuesday. See below for schedule. Here are some important reminders for you at home this week:
Schedule for Milestones: Monday 4/15: Writing (ELA 1) Tuesday 4/16: ELA 2 Wednesday 4/17: ELA 3 Thursday 4/18: Math 1 Friday 4/19: Math 2 Monday 2/ 22: Science 1 and 2 Tuesday 2/23: SS 1 and 2 After testing each day, we will do fun activities and review for upcoming milestone testing. We will go back to our unit work after Milestones is done. Message from SGC Parents, The School Governance Council would like to examine ways we can help all parents be more involved at Dolvin. Please take this short survey to provide the council with valuable information about how to improve opportunities for parent volunteering. Your answers will be anonymous unless you choose to provide contact information. Thank you! https://goo.gl/forms/lf2X6ZYehIXFxl4V2 Kids Night Out! This Friday, April 12th, Team Dolvin will be hosing a Kids Night Out (AKA Parents night out!) Students may come back to school from 3:30-7:30 to play games, watch a movie, and eat some pizza and popcorn and hang out with me and other teachers on Team Dolvin! Permission forms went home the week before spring break but I do have more if you need another! Remember all profits go towards Relay for Life which is an event and organization that impacts countless people battling cancer. Milestone Testing Schedule: Please make sure students get a good nights sleep and eat a good breakfast. They will not have a snack until AFTER testing is complete for the day. Please try to get them to school by 7:30 each morning so they will be ready to go :) Monday April 15th: ELA 1= writing Tuesday April 16th: ELA 2 Wednesday April 17th: ELA 3 Thursday April 18th: Math 1 Friday April 19th: Math 2 Monday April 22nd: Science Tuesday April 23rd: SS Korean Parent Meeting at AMMS: Curriculum Updates
Blue Math: Blue math is working on Unit 6- Volume and Measurement. We have already learned about metric and customary measurements and how to convert measurements. Please note we will NOT be converting from one measurement system to another. We will be converting within systems such as centimeters to meters or gallons to cups. Next week we will work on finding volume of rectangular prisms. A few students have already taken this test and are moving on to unit 7. However, most students have not taken the test yet. The quiz will go home Tuesday and students must take the test by Friday. Yellow Math: Yellow Math has started unit 7, numbers and their opposites. In this unit, we will cover integers both positive and negative. We have already learned about ordering and comparing integers, and how to find opposites and absolute value. We will also go one step further and learn how to perform operations with integers. Quizzes will go home Tuesday and students will test on Friday. Science/SS: Due to milestones starting next week, we will be bouncing between Science and SS units. The science information we will cover will be over genetics and heredity. Students will learn about learned behaviors and instincts as well as how things get passed from generation to generation. For SS, we will learn about the 1970's 80's 90's and 2000's. We will learn about these through reading passages, books, readers theaters, and videos. Tests over this information will not be held until after ALL 5th grade milestones are complete. |
