As always, I hope everyone had a great weekend! Please check out the information below for some important updates for this week.
Picture Day: Picture Day will be Wednesday, August 29th! Picture envelopes went home last week. Curriculum Updates: Blue Math- We are working on whole numbers and order of operations. So far, we have covered multiplying whole numbers, reviewed place value and reviewed some division strategies (partial quotients and long division). We will review our division strategies this week as well as learn the Order of Operations and how to translate and compare expressions. Please make sure your child is studying nightly. Our first unit test will be September 7th. (The test was moved back 2 days due to diagnostic testing) Remember, quizzes are unannounced. Yellow Math- We are working on number fluency. In this unit we will review how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, decimals, and fractions. We have already reviewed all operations with decimal and whole numbers. This week, we will be working with fractions again. We will focus on dividing fractions. This is a very rich unit that should be a review. If your child is struggling with computation, they need to practice at home and come see me in the mornings (during commons time) for extra help. We will also learn how to find the greatest common factor, least common multiply, and use the distributive property. Our test over this unit will be September 7th. (The test was moved back 2 days due to diagnostic testing) Remember, quizzes are unannounced. Science Test over classification of plants and animals will be Wednesday, August 29th. Social Studies- We have just started our first Social Studies unit over the Industrial Revolution and the Turn of the Century. In this unit, we will discuss key inventions of the turn of the century as well as the move westward. We will learn about the transcontinental railroad and cattle drives. We will discuss some key economic concepts as well such as supply and demand. Please note that the social studies text book is available online and the students should have the username and password written in their agenda. The link to the test book is on the social studies page of this website. Our test over this unit will be September 26th.

Science: All students will work through the same science unit. We are learning how we classify plants and animals. So far, we have learned about vertebrates, invertebrates, and the different types of vertebrates (mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and birds). We will learn about plant classification this week as well. Your child will also be bringing home a project. They have to choose their favorite vertebrate, research its characteristics, and create a resume based on a job they believe it would be good at. This project will be due next Friday, August 24th. Our test over this unit will be August 24th as well. Remember, quizzes are unannounced. I hope everyone had a great 1st week of school! I know I was exhausted but I have loved getting to know everyone!

School Dress Code Below is the Dress code as written in the Dolvin Handbook. With summer still very present, I just wanted to remind everyone of the policy. We will give the students reminders about “school clothes” and “play/home clothes” as well. We even use ourselves as examples. (Ms. Pratt has always been tall, so she has always had to buy longer clothes than her friends. Pratt wears different clothes to the park/mall during the summer than she would wear to school.) Thank you for helping reinforce the school dress code with the students. All students shall dress appropriately so as not to disrupt or interfere with the educational program or orderly operation of the school. Extremes in dressing and grooming will not be permitted. Shorts and skirts must meet finger-tip rule and straps must be one inch in width. Bare midriffs, see through clothing, and apparel that designate gangs or similar are not appropriate wear. Flip flops should not be worn to school. On the first violation, the teacher will send a note home to remind the parent and student of the dress code (use standard form). For the second violation, students will be asked to call home for appropriate clothing or borrow from the clinic. Please always feel free to email me! I believe in open communication between parents and teachers and students. I want us all on the same page :).
Have a great rest of the first week of school!!
