Important Updates and Dates to Remember:
Wednesday (10/31) HALLOWEEN= 1920's Day! - 5th grade will be participating in 1920's day on October 31st, HALLOWEEN! On this day, we dress up in 1920's attire and we travel through time to learn about silent movies, baseball, aviation, the assembly line, Jazz, the Harlem Renaissance, and more! Click HERE to sign up to help with time or supplies. November 13th from 6-6:30 will be our Jekyll Meeting. This is an informative meeting for parents about the Jekyll field trip which takes place March 13-15. This is not a mandatory meeting but is informative. Information will be coming home with students on the 14th that was covered at the meeting. Curriculum Updates *Please note test date changes! I did not realize the I had scheduled the math tests to be the day after Halloween.... Not a good idea! I will be trying out a new study system that will come home in the students study guide notebook on Tuesday. This will be a sort of check list of the standards that the students should be able to do for their test. I hope this helps parents to study with their child and have a better idea of what students will be tested on. Please note that this is not a finalized list and other topics/skills may be on the test. This is just a guide to aid in studying. Blue Math- We have been working on 5th grade unit 3. In this unit, we cover multiplying and dividing decimals. We learn how to show this in a model as well as use the standard algorithm. This unit can be difficult for students so please make sure students are completing their homework and practicing nightly! Our test over this unit has been moved to November 2nd. Yellow Math- We have been working on 6th grade unit 3. This unit covers algebraic expressions. Students will need to know important vocabulary that goes with algebraic expressions (constant, term, coefficient, etc.) We will also review and master the order of operations (PEMDAS). Students will also use math properties to simplify algebraic expressions (associative, commutative, identity, inverse). Lastly, we will learn how to translate expressions and create expressions based on solving a given word problem. Our test over this unit is November 2nd. Social Studies- We have started learning about World War I. In this unit, we will learn about how WWI started, new technology that impacted the war, and how the war ended. We will also learn about America during the 1920's. We will test over this unit on November 7th.
