I hope everyone has enjoyed the sunshine these last few days! I know I have!
I am working on updating grades this week. Please make sure to check TAC for updates by Wednesday. I apologize for the delayed update. BOOSTERTHON! Don't forget that Boosterthon donations and pledges will be taken throughout this week. We have created class incentives and the next incentive is lunch outside! We are only $2 per lap away from this (or $60)! Remember that these pledges directly help Dolvin get technology to use in our classrooms. Thank you for your continued support! Field Trip to AMMS: We will be going to Autrey Mill Middle School on March 6th (next Wednesday). We will be leaving the school at 8:45. Students will be given a snack of tater tots over at the middle school but will return to Dolvin for lunch. We are in need of 2 parent volunteers to accompany us on this trip. In order to chaperone, you must be available from 8:30-11:45 and have completed the volunteer requirements for Fulton County. Sign up to chaperone HERE. (chaperones can be from either my AM or PM class since all students will be attending the trip.) Music: Don't forget to purchase a recorder as we will begin our recorder unit in music soon. Curriculum Updates: Blue Math: We are working on unit 5, 2D shapes and their attributes. Test date over unit 5 will be Feb. 28th. Students will learn about the attributes of shapes and how they relate to each other in a hierarchy of shapes. While this unit has very little math "computations", students still tend to struggle with all of the reading that is required of them. Please make sure you are reviewing and help your child work through this unit. You can play a fun review game by following the following link: GAME CODE 345587 Ask your students to join game with this code at https://join.quizizz.com Yellow Math: We are working on unit 6 which covers Statistics. This is a difficult unit as it is one of the first times students will be dealing with statistics. Students will be required to analyze information and graph their information in order to draw conclusions. They will learn how to find measures of center including mean, median, and mode as well as graph using histograms and box plots. Please make sure you are reviewing and help your child work through this unit. So far, we have covered data distribution, frequency charts, relative frequency, and histograms. Our tentative test date over this unit is March 7th. Here are some helpful videos and practice questions from Khan Academy. Science: We are starting a new science unit this week over cells and microorganisms. This unit is very rich in vocabulary. Please make sure you are reviewing the vocabulary and concepts with your child. There are some great brainpops on cells and cell organelles. Below you can find a fun online quiz as well. I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend! Please check below for some important weekly updates:
MUSIC Students will soon begin a series of lessons on the recorder during their General Music class. This unit of study is an excellent introduction to the basic concepts, symbols and terminology involved in learning music. The course of study is designed to provide a “Hands-On” experience for playing an instrument. Your child will be using the recorders during each music class throughout the unit. You have two options with the recorders. First, you may choose to purchase a recorder for your son or daughter. They can be purchased at most music stores for under $10.00. In the event that you are unable to purchase a recorder, the Music Department also has a few used recorders that can be loaned to students for the music class period only. Please email the music department if you are in need. I encourage the purchasing of recorders so that students can take them home after the music class and can practice as desired. Thank you for your encouragement and interest in our music program. We will begin recorder studyMonday, February 25th. Music stores around the North Point Area are Music and Arts and Ken Stanton Music. You may also wish to purchase through Amazon: click here, or West Music: click here. Here is a neck strap if your child wishes to purchase one or make one using yarn or ribbon as we often move and play in class. So far, we have learned about the causes, why America entered the war, and what life was like here on the home front. We will continue to learn about turning points of the war and events that finally led to the end of the war. Our test over this unit will be Friday, February 22nd. Milestone Madness! We are about 7 weeks away from spring break which means we are starting Milestone Madness! This is homework for students over the next 7 weeks. Please see information linked on my website here with expectations and a video explaining Milestone Madness. PIE WARS!!

Jekyll The second Jekyll packet is due back by this Friday. Keep in mind the second payment was already due. Make sure to complete the insurance information as well as the medical form if your child takes any medications. If it is a prescription medication, the form must be signed by a doctor. The child's teacher leader will make sure they get their medication each day. PIE WARS!! Pie Wars started last week and will last until Friday! I happily got pied in the face last year after raising the most money. All profits go to Relay for Life, an important organization in my life and many others. Please consider donating! I also keep track of how much money we raise as a class and that is how many laps I have to walk at the Relay for Life North Fulton event in May! International Day: International day is this Wednesday. Students may wear traditional clothing of their heritage to share with their classmates. International day is filled with a parade as well as parent booths that teach students all about the different cultures of Dolvin. Curriculum Updates: Blue Math: We will be finishing up our unit on fractions. Students have learned how to multiply fractions and will learn how to divide fractions this week. They will also learn how to record data on a line plot and redistribute amounts evenly. Our test date for unit 4B will be February 8th. Yellow Math: We are working on 6th grade unit 5. In this unit, students reviewed how to find the area of rectangles, squares, and parallelograms. They will also learned how to find the area of a triangle, kite, rhombus, and more. We also learned how to find the surface area of a 3D shape using its net. This week, we will review how to find the volume of a rectangular prism. Our test date for unit 5 will be February 8th. Social Studies: We will be starting a new Social Studies unit on WWII. In this unit, students will learn about the causes of WWII, the leaders and important people who influenced WWII, important events of WWII, and how WWII came to an end. This unit is a very interesting unit to teach. It is also a very sad unit as we discuss the Holocaust which has effected many people. I expect students to be respectful and understand that it is our duty to learn about all of the hard times in history as well as the good times. |
