Happy Monday! I am so sorry I have not sent out an update earlier last week. This update will last until spring break! (Also can't believe it is already almost spring break!) Message from SGC Parents, The School Governance Council would like to examine ways we can help all parents be more involved at Dolvin. Please take this short survey to provide the council with valuable information about how to improve opportunities for parent volunteering. Your answers will be anonymous unless you choose to provide contact information. Thank you! https://goo.gl/forms/lf2X6ZYehIXFxl4V2 Milestone Madness Coach Digital is back up again! Milestone Madness for this week is linked on the milestone page of my website linked below. Please make sure your child is completing the homework each week and reviewing for the upcoming tests. Curriculum Updates
Report cards will be going home on Friday. Over the last month, I have noticed a dip in student achievement in class. While this most likely has many causes, one big problem I have seen in class lately is lack of effort. I have addressed this with students and done what I felt was right to properly show what students were really capable of. This has meant re-doing assessments even if the score was not below a 70. What I saw was a much better grade the second time around with no re-teaching. This shows the problem in the first attempt was effort and not ability. I have had this discussion with students and have noticed a big difference in the last week. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out. Blue Math: Blue math is working on Unit 6- Volume and Measurement. We have already learned about metric and customary measurements and how to convert measurements. Please note we will NOT be converting from one measurement system to another. We will be converting within systems such as centimeters to meters or gallons to cups. Next week we will work on finding volume of rectangular prisms. Our test is tentative for BEFORE spring break on March 29th. This will be finalized after I see how students perform on the quiz. Because this is another fast unit, if students are not ready to take the test before spring break, they may take it after they return. Yellow Math: Yellow Math has started unit 7, numbers and their opposites. In this unit, we will cover integers both positive and negative. We have already learned about ordering and comparing integers, and how to find opposites and absolute value. We will also go one step further and learn how to perform operations with integers. We will not test over this unit until after Milestone testing. We will have a quiz before spring break. Social Studies: Our current social studies will cover the cold war and civil rights movement. So far, we have learned how the cold war started, the difference between the Iron Curtain and the Berlin Wall, and the Berlin Airlift. We have also talked about some of the conflicts between the US and the Soviet Union such as the arms race and the space race. We will continue to learn about events of the Cold War including the Korean War and Vietnam War, the end of the Cold War, and important people from the war. We will also learn about the Civil Rights movement, the Civil Rights Act, and important people of the civil rights movement. We plan on testing this unit BEFORE spring break as well. More: Camp Invention® is returning to Fulton County School District! In partnership with the National Inventors Hall of Fame® (NIHF), Ocee Elementary School is pleased to offer the nationally acclaimed Camp Invention® program to children entering kindergarten through sixth grade. It’s an exciting, weeklong summer adventure with lessons that explore connections between science, technology, engineering and innovation. Children work together to create solutions to real-world problems and build critical 21st-century skills while rotating through several high-energy, hands-on modules. The week begins on June 17, 2019 with Sarah Harkins serving as Director of the ALL-NEW 2019 program, Supercharged! Here are how young innovators will be spending their time: • Exploring the electrifying relationship between frequency, circuitry, motors and gears through reverse-engineering and rebuilding their very own remote-controlled robot. • Unearthing hidden fossils then building ships and innovative equipment to embark on a research expedition to uncover more exciting information about their discovery. • Coding and programming robot, Bot-ANN-E, to take on duties and help turn a polluted wasteland into a fruitful farm and successful business. • Collaborating with the Innovation Force®, a team of NIHF Inventors turned action-packed superheroes, to design superhero gadgets and disguises, explore the fields of engineering and fabrication and take on the sinister villain, the Plagiarizer. Activities give participants the opportunity to explore, discover and achieve while having fun! Local educators facilitate program modules and enthusiastic high-school students serve as Leadership Interns, ensuring that one staff member is in place for every eight children. Happy Monday! I hope everyone had a great weekend and is ready for a full week ahead! Milestone Madness Coach Digital is currently down. Milestone Madness for this week is all linked on the milestone page of my website linked below. Please make sure your child is completing the homework each week and reviewing for the upcoming tests. AMMS Field Trip
We will be at AMMS from 8:45-11:30 on Wednesday. Students will have a chance to learn about Autrey Mill Middle School and ask questions they have. They will also have a snack while we are there. Curriculum Updates Blue Math: We are working on unit 5, 2D shapes and their attributes. Test date over unit 5 has been changed to March 7th. This was changed due to student performance on the quiz. 5th Grade math teachers have decided to reteach the skills and allow students to make corrections to their quiz. They will also have 3 more classwork grades on this unit in order to ensure they have full understanding of the standards of the unit. Students have learned about the attributes of shapes and how they relate to each other in a hierarchy of shapes. While this unit has very little math "computations", students still tend to struggle with all of the reading that is required of them. Please make sure you are reviewing and help your child work through this unit. You can play a fun review game by following the following link: GAME CODE 345587 Ask your students to join game with this code at https://join.quizizz.com Yellow Math: We are working on unit 6 which covers Statistics. This is a difficult unit as it is one of the first times students will be dealing with statistics. Students will be required to analyze information and graph their information in order to draw conclusions. They have learned how to find measures of center including mean, median, and mode as well as graph using histograms. Students will learn measures of variability and box plots this week. Please make sure you are reviewing and help your child work through this unit. Our test date over this unit is March 7th. Here are some helpful videos and practice questions from Khan Academy. Science: We are working on a science unit this week over cells and microorganisms. This unit is very rich in vocabulary. Please make sure you are reviewing the vocabulary and concepts with your child. There are some great brainpops on cells and cell organelles. Below you can find a fun online quiz as well. The test for this unit will be March 8th. GAME CODE 506578 Ask your students to join game with this code at https://join.quizizz.com |
