I hope all of my students and their parents had a great first day back to school! I know I did!
We will continue to get to know each other and learn class expectations and procedures throughout the week. We will start instruction this week in math and social studies. I do teach multiple levels in each block. There will be a blue math and a yellow math. Students will learn which math group they are in tomorrow. You may check below to see what they will be learning in this current unit. Due to our schedule this year, students in 5th grade will be going to specials with their afternoon class. The specials schedule for my afternoon class is as follows: Monday- Music with Ms. Endicott Tuesday- PE Wednesday- Art with Ms. Knight Thursday- PE Friday- Discovery Lab/ Media Center Please don't forget to complete the parent survey. There are two different surveys specific for homeroom and PM parents. At this time, I am still in need of a Lead Room Parent and a Basket Raffle Coordinator Volunteer. Please make sure to complete the correct survey by clicking HERE. In addition to math, students will study SS and science in my classroom. We will start with a SS unit and then transition to a science unit. This will alternate throughout the year. You can check below to find what we will be learning in our current SS unit. Please take a few minutes to explore my website. Pay particular attention to the class tab. You will find a variety of resources there for each unit. This is updated as needed as we get to specific units. Curriculum Night is August 28th at 6:30 PM Curriculum Updates: Blue Math: Students in blue math will be starting with 5th grade unit 1. In this unit, we will learn how to multiply and divide whole numbers which also learning the order of operations. We will also work on multiplying and dividing powers of ten and reviewing place value. I strongly encourage you to practice math facts nightly with your child. Memorization of multiplication and division facts makes life so much easier :). This unit has 4 prioritized standards. In order to have a guaranteed and viable curriculum, students will be monitored until they reach mastery on these important standards. We will discuss priority standards more at curriculum night. The test over this unit is TBD. Yellow Math: Students in yellow math will start with 6th grade unit 1. In this unit, students will review how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, decimals, and fractions. This covers 4 units that they learned last year while taking 5th grade math. It is a challenging unit if students have not mastered these skills last year. Please make sure you are reviewing with your child once instruction starts to ensure they are confident in these skills. We will also learn how to find the greatest common factors and the least common multiples between two or three numbers. This unit has 2 prioritized standards. In order to have a guaranteed and viable curriculum, students will be monitored until they reach mastery on these important standards. We will discuss priority standards more at curriculum night. The test over this unit is TBD. Social Studies: We will start the year off with a social studies unit where we will learn about the Turn of the Century. We will learn about a second wave of westward expansion, the industrial revolution, and immigration patterns. The overarching question for this quarter will be "How did electricity influence the economy at the Turn of the Century?". Students will work on answering this question using a podcast project in groups. The test over this unit is TBD.
