I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend! Please check below for some important weekly updates:
MUSIC Students will soon begin a series of lessons on the recorder during their General Music class. This unit of study is an excellent introduction to the basic concepts, symbols and terminology involved in learning music. The course of study is designed to provide a “Hands-On” experience for playing an instrument. Your child will be using the recorders during each music class throughout the unit. You have two options with the recorders. First, you may choose to purchase a recorder for your son or daughter. They can be purchased at most music stores for under $10.00. In the event that you are unable to purchase a recorder, the Music Department also has a few used recorders that can be loaned to students for the music class period only. Please email the music department if you are in need. I encourage the purchasing of recorders so that students can take them home after the music class and can practice as desired. Thank you for your encouragement and interest in our music program. We will begin recorder studyMonday, February 25th. Music stores around the North Point Area are Music and Arts and Ken Stanton Music. You may also wish to purchase through Amazon: click here, or West Music: click here. Here is a neck strap if your child wishes to purchase one or make one using yarn or ribbon as we often move and play in class. Megan Endicott [email protected] Music Specialist Blue Math: We are starting unit 5, 2D shapes and their attributes. Test date over unit 5 will be Feb. 28th. Students will learn about the attributes of shapes and how they relate to each other in a hierarchy of shapes. While this unit has very little math "computations", students still tend to struggle with all of the reading that is required of them. Please make sure you are reviewing and help your child work through this unit. Yellow Math: We are starting unit 6 which covers Statistics. This is a difficult unit as it is one of the first times students will be dealing with statistics. Students will be required to analyze information and graph their information in order to draw conclusions. They will learn how to find measures of center including mean, median, and mode as well as graph using histograms and box plots. Please make sure you are reviewing and help your child work through this unit. Our tentative test date over this unit is March 7th. Social Studies: We are continuing working on World War II. So far, we have learned about the causes, why America entered the war, and what life was like here on the home front. We will continue to learn about turning points of the war and events that finally led to the end of the war. Our test over this unit will be Friday, February 22nd.
