Welcome back to a new semester of 5th grade!! I hope everyone had an amazing break and are rejuvenated to have an amazing rest of the year!
Please read important updates below: 5th Grade Updates: 20’s Day: 20's day will be Friday of this week. The students may dress in 20’s attire if they wish. (Babe Ruth, flapper’s costumes, Aviators etc.) Just make sure the outfit follows school dress code! The students will rotate from teacher to teacher, and will learn about various aspects of the Roaring Twenties. They will do activities involving Aviation (Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart), Silent Movies (Charlie Chaplin), The Assembly Line (Henry Ford), the Jazz era, The Harlem Renaissance, and Sports (Babe Ruth). We are in need of some supplies for this fun day. If you are able to provide any of the following, please bring them in between Wednesday and Thursday. - Graham Crackers (peanut free) - 3 boxes - Frosting- 3 cans - Starbursts - 2 bags - Lifesavers (Hard Candy) - 2 bags Girls on the Run: Girls on the Run is a transformational physical activity-based positive youth development program for girls and teaches life skills through dynamic interactive lessons and running games. The program culminates with girls being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5k running event. The goal of the program is to unleash confidence through accomplishment while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness. Lottery registration for Girls on the Run will be December 15 through January 17 at 11:59 pm at https://www.girlsontherunatlanta.org/Program-Registration. For teams that do not fill during the lottery period, registration will re-open January 18 and continue through February 14. GOTR meets twice a week, Monday and Wednesday from 2:30 to 4:00 beginning February 5 and ending the week of April 30 at Dolvin. The program is for 3rd -5th-grade girls. The fee is $170 ($180 for Fulton County schools) for the 12-week season. Partial scholarships are available during online registration on a sliding scale starting at $25. In this unit, we will learn about shape attributes. We will also organize these shapes in a hierarchy. We will test over this unit on February 2nd. Yellow Math: We are continuing 6th grade Unit 1. Quizzes that students took before winter will come home to review. We have already covered adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing whole numbers, decimals, and fractions. We will start to learn about GCF, LCM, and the distributive property this week. We will test over this unit on January 24th. Green Math: We are starting Unit 5 this week. In this unit, we will learn about area of quadrilaterals, triangles, and composite figures. We will also learn about the volume of rectangular prisms and how to represent 3D figures in a net. We will test over this unit on February 9th. Social Studies: Our current Social Studies unit is covering America during the 1920's and the Great Depression. We will test over this unit on January 26th.
