Unleash the Lions
The 2018-19 school year is quickly coming to an end, and now it is time to celebrate the achievements of our 5th grade students. The Dolvin staff has worked with the room parents to coordinate the activities for the last week of school. To make all of these activities possible, we are asking for a DONATION of $10 per student. An email will be sent to you with a link for volunteer sign-ups on Thursday, April 25th at 7PMby your Homeroom Teacher. Volunteer sign-ups will be on a first come, first served basis. When signing up to volunteer, please select only one event per family to allow an opportunity for all parents. If additional slots become available your child’s teacher will contact you. The schedule of events will be coming home with your child today. Ron Clark Academy: I had the amazing opportunity to attend a day of training and professional development at the Ron Clark Academy in Atlanta. If you do not know what this is, it is basically Hogwarts for muggles :). I learned a lot and am planning on implementing some of the strategies in my class to create a rigorous, fun, and family oriented learning environment. When I try new things, students will give me feedback in order for me to see exactly what will work for me in my classroom. I may also send home a parent survey just to gauge where I am and where I want to be. This will create three pillars of education in my classroom which are academic rigor, student engagement, and culture and community. I can't wait to take what I learned and saw and create a magical place for students to learn. Curriculum Updates: Blue Math: We are working on unit 7, coordinate plane geometry. In this unit, students will learn how to plot and read ordered pairs in all four quadrants. They will be able to create patterns to solve real world problems in the first quadrant using x-y charts as well. So far, we have learned how to plot ordered pairs, write ordered pairs, and develop patterns. This week, we will work on real world patterns that can be graphed in a coordinate plane. Yellow math will also be learning in their unit about coordinate plane geometry so we will be fluid and work together with both math groups in class! Our test over this unit will be Friday, May 10th. Yellow Math: We are continuing our work on integers by using integers in the coordinate plane. Students will be able to read and plot points. They will also be able to create shapes in the coordinate grid. For example, given 3 points, they will be able to identify where another point will need to be in order to make a square. So far, we have reviewed how to plot and read ordered pairs. We have also learned how to calculate distance from point to point on a coordinate plane. Lastly, we have learned how to identify shapes in the coordinate grid. This week, we will review graphing inequalities, reflecting points, and finding missing points on a coordinate plane. Blue math will also be learning in their unit about coordinate plane geometry so we will be fluid and work together with both math groups in class! Our test over this unit will be Friday, May 10th. Science: Our last science unit will be over Heredity. In this unit, students will learn how traits are inherited as well as learned. They will be able to tell the difference between inherited traits and instincts as well as learned behaviors. So far, we have learned about inherited traits. This week, we will learn about instincts and learned behaviors. Our test over this unit will be Wednesday, May 8th. We will also be doing another short review on microorganisms. In this unit we will learn how microorganisms are beneficial and harmful. We will have a formative assessment over this information but no test. Social Studies: Our last social studies unit will cover 1975- present day as well as personal economic and budgeting. There are a lot of events packed into these decades with very little time to cover them all. Students will be focusing on the end of the cold war, conflict in the middle east, and modern technology. We will have a formative assessment over this unit but no test.
