This is our hardest unit of the year and it is the most important. Our milestones are weighted 30-40% in fractions. We will assess the unit in 2 parts. We will cover fraction basics and adding and subtracting fractions in December. After winter break, we will learn about multiplying and dividing fractions and will not test on those skills until February. So far in unit 4A, we worked on making equivalent fractions. This SHOULD be a review for students. We also learned why we need equivalent fractions to add and subtract fractions. We learned how to add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators. This week, we will be working on adding and subtracting mixed numbers. We will test over unit 4A on December 12th. Yellow Math: We are continuing a unit which will covers algebraic expressions. In this unit, students will review how to translate expressions, solve for variables, and learn how to write and solve inequalities. So far, we have learned how to solve for a variable in algebraic expressions in both one and two step equations and how to write and solve inequalities. This week we will learn how to write an equation using the direct variation equation (y=kx). We will test over this unit (6th grade unit 4) on December 12th. Social Studies: We are currently learning about the Great Depression and economics. We learned about the causes of the Great Depression, government leadership during the Great Depression, and New Deal programs. We will also learn about economic concepts such as supply and demand and the 4 sectors of the economy. We will test over this unit on December 14th.
